SCO chief appreciates Iran's campaign against terrorism

    Latest NewsChina-Terrorism-SCO
Secretary-General of Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Zhang Deguang declared that Iran will participate in the upcoming SCO summit and appreciated its campaign against terrorism.

A report released by Xinhua News Agency on Wednesday said that China cannot come to terms with those who believe that Iran supports terrorism, given that there is no proof based on which this can be proved.

The US Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld once more repeated Washington's former claims that Iran is a supporter of terrorism and criticized accepting it as an SCO observer member.

Since Iran was accepted as an SCO observer a year ago, the US officials have displayed their dissatisfaction by raising various claims, which have been encountered with the reaction of China and Russia as founders of SCO.

The US brings up its claim over Iran's alleged support for terrorism, while Iran itself has been hit by terrorists over the past year and is involved in campaigns against terrorism.

Deguang told reporters Tuesday that SCO respects Iran's interest in cooperating with the organization.

it calls for growing cooperation among member countries in economic, security and military domains.

"Iran does not support terrorism and as SCO observer has declared its support for the organization's principles and goals regarding promotion of regional stability and security," added SCO chief.

The sixth SCO summit is scheduled to be held in the port city of Shanghai in eastern China.

Shanghai Cooperation Organization, which was founded by six countries in 2001, aims to bolster cooperation among member states including China, Russia, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan and Tajikistan.

By accepting Iran, Pakistan and India as observer members in 2005, SCO expanded the scope of its activities. Meanwhile, it stopped involvement in security matters within common borders and promised a kind of new structure for regional convergence.

At the sixth SCO summit, the heads of member states will discuss the policy on expansion of the organization, cooperation aiming to secure SCO members' mutual interests in political, security and economic fields. Besides, they are expected to sign important do*****ents.
