 | Jury considers fate of accused terrorist |
The jury in the trial of accused terrorist Joseph Terrence
Thomas has retired to consider its verdict.
Thomas, 32, of Werribee has pleaded not guilty in the Victorian
Supreme Court to intentionally receiving funds from and providing
resources to al-Qaeda, and possessing a false...
passport.
He whispered "I love you" in the direction of his parents, Patsy
and Ian Thomas, as Justice Philip *****mins gave his final
instructions to the 12 jurors.
The judge sent the nine women and three men out to begin
deliberations at 4pm (AEDT).
During the trial the Crown alleged Thomas had agreed to be a
sleeper agent in Australia for Osama bin Laden.
Crown prosecutor Nicholas Robinson said while Thomas was in
Pakistan Osama bin Laden associate Khaled bin Attash gave Thomas
$US3,500 ($A4,740) and a plane ticket home, after he agreed to
surveil military installations in Australia.
Thomas' barrister Lex Lasry, QC, argued his client had not
agreed to anything of the sort and intended to use the money to
help his family.
