Solitary: Amundsen must be escorted by two guards if he leaves his cell.

Terrorism accused's jail regime 'absurd'

The Queensland Council of Civil Liberties says the strict custodial arrangements being enforced on the Brisbane school teacher accused of terrorism-related charges are "absurd".

John Howard Amundsen was yesterday transferred from police custody to the maximum security unit at the Arthur Gorrie Correctional Centre, where he is being kept in solitary confinement.

He is being kept under 24-hour observation, and is handcuffed and escorted by two guards whenever he is out of a cell.

Police Minister Judy Spence says the 40-year-old is being held in accordance with nationally-agreed terrorist laws.

But Michael Cope, from the Queensland Council of Civil Liberties, says the treatment is unnecessarily harsh.

"We would accept that there must be certain security concerns, but the regime seems ... to be totally over the top," he said.

"No matter what he is charged with ... he is presumed innocent until proven guilty, and to treat him like that just violates that fundamental rule of our legal system."
